dude.

i must preface this story with a little background info about our main character, jill m. moore. i've always had a certain longing to receive surprise gifts at my doorstep, on my windshield, in my locker, really anywhere a surprise could be left that would still constitute it as a surprise. this has only happened probably three or four times in my life, each instance more magical than the next. so you can imagine my delight when i climbed up the stairs to my apartment tonight, rounded the corner and saw a neatly placed kraft envelope resting against my door, waiting patiently to be opened. i immediately raced through the list of suspects in my mind, who is this from? with the current circumstances in my life, i couldn't quite place my finger on one particular candidate. i picked it up and entered my apartment, heart racing. is this going to be something romantic (oooooo, i hope i hope i hope!!!) ? is this a cute, thoughtful little gift from a girlfriend? is it a bomb? i felt through the package with x-ray fingers, desperately trying to solve this little mystery, but way too excited to actually do it. after i completed the standard i-just-entered-the-apartment-bug-check (checking all the walls, cracks, ceilings, nooks and crannies throughout the entire apartment for spiders and/or centipedes) and walked around in a daze for several minutes, clinging tightly to the envelope, i finally got the nerve to open it. what the hell? a candy bar? well, i guess not just any candy bar -- a Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate with Caramel Filling candy bar. okay, but seriously what the fuck? oh, there's a letter.

September 27, 2005

Dear Neighbor,

Hello, hope all is going well for you. Just wanted to run something by you, I'll try not to take up too much of your time.

My apartment is directly beneath yours, and it being an old building that we live in, I think that we catch a lot of each others' noise. To some extent, I definitely expect that sort of thing. I am hoping, however, that during the hours of say 11 PM or midnight, to 7 or 8 AM on weeknights that you will try and keep it down. The reason I mention these hours is because there seems to be a lot of noise coming from your place pretty late. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I can say that there seems to be a lot of noisy back and forth motion. Unfortunately, most of the activity happens to be right over my bedroom, and right over my bed. At times like 3:30 AM. I am totally understanding about weekends, and reasonable hours, but during the week I need to get sleep.

I ask this apologetically, and in a friendly manner, because I would like for us to be cool as neighbors. In turn, if I am ever doing something that keeps you awake, please feel free to let me know. In fact, just give me a call, if that is what you are most comfortable with. My home number is 517.333.****.

Again, sorry to bother you with this, and I seriously don't care so much about noise on weekends.

Thanks very much,

(signature in blue Crayola* marker)

-Typed Name

so it's true. i am the elephant that lives upstairs. i've been secretly suspecting this since i moved in a couple months ago, but my suspicions were never validated, that is until tonight. so now what do i do? this is quite the predicament. i am, by the very definition, a night person. and Neighbor was right about 3:30 am, five times out of seven, i am up that late. but it's not like i'm jumping up and down on the ground or anything. the floors are super old and they creak with every step, plus i'm fat so i'm sure that doesn't help much. so, it's official. i'm an elephant. now what the fuck am i supposed to do?

this is clearly a very nice person, i mean come on! a GHIRARDELLI candy bar! and a carefully written letter; each word timid, cautious, polite. i feel so bad! but that's when i'm up! and i'm not being overly loud or anything, it's just a case of me being awake and Neighbor being asleep. what do i do what do i do what do i do?

fuck, as if my apartment weren't grandma enough, now this.

* i can just tell
